John Ross shares advice he got while training with T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross sounds ready to get back to practicing with the team after battling tightness in his hamstring.

But Bengals coaches have been adamant Ross comes along slowly and takes it easy so as to avoid risking another setback.

And it turns out T.J. Houshmandzadeh — who has worked out consistently with Ross over the last few years — has said the same thing.

Ross said the following, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“(Houshmandzadeh) told me while I was (in Los Angeles last month) that I shouldn’t be overworking it. I think that’s my problem. I don’t nearly do as much as you see people do on Instagram, but I do a lot and go very hard. Even Coach Taylor told to take it easy when I went back this summer. I feel like I toned it down, but I guess I didn’t enough. I think now I’ve got a better idea of how much I can do.”

It certainly isn’t uncommon for quick-twitch athletes as fast as Ross to deal with these sorts of issues. Houshmandzadeh’s watchful eye is clearly on the money, especially if the Bengals coaching staff agrees.

A year ago, Houshmandzadeh was blunt in saying Ross needed to refine his game from a route-running standpoint. They worked together on it and Ross went on to quietly score seven touchdowns, mostly as a threat inside the 20-yard line.

This offseason, Houshmandzadeh is stressing Ross slows down to stay healthy, so it should be interesting to see how it plays out.
