John Prescott's son is appointed Jeremy Corbyn's new speechwriter

Jeremy Corbyn has signed up John Prescott’s son as his new speechwriter.

David Prescott was a backer of Andy Burnham in last year’s leadership campaign and said – in the summer – that “my politics have more in common with Owen Smith”.

However, he backed Mr Corbyn during Mr Smith’s ill-fated leadership bid which ended with crushing defeat for the challenger.

Mr Prescott said Mr Corbyn deserved longer to prove he was up to the job and praised him for single-handedly doubling the party membership in his own constituency.

In an article in July, he added: “I want to see a much sharper operation in Corbyn’s office and an increased level of professionalism in being a Leader inside and outside the Commons.

“It will mean managing some people out and bringing more experienced people in. Those who can build a consensus, not a barrier.

“It would also involve Jeremy and his team accepting some of the constructive criticisms made by certain MPs.”

Mr Prescott also warned that, unless Labour could become an effective opposition, it would be “out of power for at least decade”.

And, describing himself, he said: “I’m neither a Corbynista or a ‘moderate.’”
