John Paul Smyth missing: 15-year-old last seen on New Year's Eve

Search parties are out looking for a Co Down schoolboy who hasn't been seen since New Year's Eve.

John Paul Smyth, 15, from Newry, is understood to have travelled to Warrenpoint with pals before he disappeared on December 31.

Community Rescue Service (CRS) said they are involved in searches for the youngster in the Co Down towns, while others are reported to be looking for him in Belfast.

CRS boss Sean McCarry told Belfast Live: "He was last seen at Warrenpoint with young friends and has not been seen since.

"We are searching for him in Newry and Warrenpoint and had volunteers out yesterday and throughout last night."

Police have issued an appeal to drivers who have dashcam footage to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "Police are requesting drivers who may have been in Warrenpoint town centre or travelling along the dual carriageway leaving Warrenpoint in the direction of Newry during the early hours of  Wednesday 1 January from 3am-4am with dash cam footage to please contact police on 101.

"We believe some drivers with dash cams in their vehicle may have footage which could potentially assist us with our inquiries into missing teenager JP Smyth who has not been seen since New Year’s Eve."

Inspector Frances McCullough added: “JP was last seen in Warrenpoint town centre at approximately 6.15pm on Tuesday 31 December and we are appealing for anyone who has seen him since then to contact us.

"He is described as being tall and of a slim build with brown eyes and short brown hair. When last seen JP was wearing a black puffa-style jacket, beige tracksuit bottoms and white trainers."

“We are working with Community Rescue and Search in continuous efforts to locate JP and we will exhaust every avenue in order to bring him home safely.

“If anyone has any information about his current whereabouts or who thinks they may have seen him in the last few days please contact police on 101 quoting reference 1876 31/12/19.”
