John Oliver Rips Into the Questionable Attractions Planned for the Chaotic Freedom 250 Celebration

John Oliver just eviscerated the chaotic Freedom 250 celebration, calling out its questionable attractions, bizarre lineup, and sheer absurdity. On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver didn’t hold back as he ripped into the event, which is supposed to celebrate America’s 250th birthday but instead feels like a poorly planned high school reunion.

According to Variety, the Freedom 250 concert series, running from June 25 to July 10 at the National Mall in Washington D.C., was initially pitched as a nonpartisan celebration. But things took a turn when the Trump-aligned group Freedom 250 took over planning from the bipartisan nonprofit America250.

Oliver didn’t mince words about the shift, pointing out that donors could allegedly get access to Trump for a cool $1 million. “And as its political slant became clear, acts who were part of that initial announcement quickly began to bail,” he said.

And bail they did

Artists like Young MC, Morris Day and the Time, The Commodores, Martina McBride, and Bret Michaels all pulled out once they realized what they were getting into. Trump, never one to take criticism lightly, fired back on Truth Social, calling the artists “overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain” and suggesting they should just “cancel it.”

Oliver’s reaction? “Yeah, that is a lot of cancellations. Although I do have to tell you: Vanilla Ice did not pull out, which I do realize sounds like the answer to the question, ‘Why does that baby have frosted tips?’”

The lineup that is still standing is, well, a mess. C+C Music Factory is down to just their rapper Freedom Williams, who initially agreed to perform, then considered backing out, then doubled down, all while filming a seven-minute bathroom video explaining his decision. Oliver’s take? “Even some of the acts currently still scheduled to play may not be the exact people you’re expecting.”

The concerts aren’t the only thing raising eyebrows

The Freedom 250 celebration also includes a UFC event at the White House, an IndyCar race, and a Times Square-style ball drop. Oliver joked that the attractions have a “substitute teacher doesn’t give a f—” energy, complete with state showcases, a 110-foot Ferris wheel, and screenings of National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

“Given how everything has been going,” he said, “I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if tomorrow we got a press release reading, ‘Due to divisive politics, I will no longer be attending the 250th celebration’ from the f—ing Ferris wheel.”

Bill Maher, another late-night host who’s no stranger to mocking Trump, also took his shots at the Freedom 250 concert during a recent Real Time monologue. Maher pointed out the irony of the lineup, which includes acts like Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli, comparing it to Trump’s 2017 pre-inauguration concert, which featured The Piano Guys and someone called DJ Ravidrums. “I think this is very admirable about the president,” Maher said. “It shows that he’s concerned for the unemployed.”

Maher also highlighted the wave of dropouts, with artists claiming they were misled about the event’s political nature. Martina McBride even took to X to clarify her exit, writing, “I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading.” Maher’s response? “That’s got to hurt a lot when you can’t close the deal with Milli Vanilli.”

The whole thing feels like a fever dream

You’ve got a concert series with a lineup that reads like a time capsule from the early ’90s, a UFC event at the White House, and a $250 bill with Trump’s face on it – something Maher couldn’t resist mocking. “Here’s something in the category of wow, we never used to be this country: They’re putting out a $250 bill with Trump’s face on it,” he said.

“I guess it’s commemorative. Republicans in Congress are thrilled about it. They can’t wait to carry it in their wallet. What a switcheroo: having Trump’s face next to their a**.”

Freedom 250 feels less like a historic milestone and more like a last-minute attempt to throw together something, anything, to mark the occasion. Oliver summed it up best: “Honestly, that sounds less like America’s 250th birthday and more like the playlist at Rhonda’s 50th.”

The event’s political undertones have only made things worse. What was supposed to be a bipartisan celebration has turned into a magnet for controversy, with artists bailing left and right and Trump lashing out at anyone who criticizes the lineup. If you’re planning to attend, just know you’re in for a wild ride, one that might leave you questioning whether you’re at a birthday party or a circus.
