After years of obsessing over northern soul and R&B from his bedroom in north Yorkshire, John Newman saw his career explode: a guest vocalist on the No 1 Rudimental single Feel the Love, before long, he was penning his own material, was working with Plan B and was on both Later … with Jools Holland and a Top of the Pops Christmas episode. His debut album, Tribute, has now sold 300,000 copies worldwide, beating Paul McCartney and Cher to the No 1 spot on the British album charts. As part of Guardian music's Live for 2014 series, here he is playing at O2 Shepherd's Bush before thousands of fans.
