John Murtough impressing in meetings with stars like Cristiano Ronaldo still on wishlist

Manchester United football director John Murtough has been impressing in meetings with club contacts this transfer window, according to reports.

Murtough and Darren Fletcher were hired as football director and technical director respectively earlier in the year as part of a restructure that coincides with Ed Woodward stepping down from his role as executive vice-chairman.

This is the pair's first transfer window in their new roles, and according to sources that have spoken to the Manchester Evening News, the duo have been impressive in meetings.

Murtough's main role is to communicate the club's strategy beyond transfer window dealings.

Murtough, who was hired in March, does have a hand in Manchester United's transfer business, but the recruitment process is largely overseen by other people at the club.

Director of football negotiations Matt Judge is the point of contact to discuss the terms of a prospective target, while Solskjaer and technical chief scout Mick Court head up the recruitment process.

The MEN adds that Red Devils players have spoken highly of Murtough and that sources have described him as both a 'fixer' and the 'leader' at the training complex.

Fletcher, meanwhile, returned to Man United in an official capacity in January.

Manchester United recently announced that they have agreed on a deal worth £73million to sign Jadon Sancho.

The club are expected to announce the Dortmund forward after the Euros.

United are also on the hunt for a new centre-back, with Real Madrid's Raphael Varane at the top of their wishlist.

And, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo remains linked with a stunning return to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has one year left on his contract at Juventus and is reportedly open to a move this month.

But according to recent reports in Italy, his agent Jorge Mendez is ready to begin talks with Juventus about extending the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's stay in Turin.
