John Mullin, the former editor of the Independent on Sunday, has been appointed as the Telegraph Media Group’s deputy head of sport.
Mullin’s new job is part of a reorganisation reported by the Sports Journalists’ Association (SJA) following the departure of sports editor Jim Bruce-Ball.
Mullin will be deputy to Adam Sills, the head of sport. And Andy Fifield now has the post of sports editor (features and planning). Another appointment, to a new role of sports editor (live), is yet to be announced .
Mullin, once of this parish in a variety of roles including Ireland correspondent, was deputy editor of The Scotsman for three years until joining the Independent as executive editor in 2003.
He went on to edit the Sindy for six years until 2013, leaving the paper when it became part of a seven-day operation that encompassed the Independent and London Evening Standard.
Mullin joined the Telegraph as head of sports news last August after having worked at the BBC as editor of its Scottish referendum coverage.
Sills, quoted by the SJA, said: “We’re delighted that John and Andy will continue in their new roles.” As he pointed out, this summer “holds much excitement for sports fans with the Euros and the Rio Olympics to look forward to.”
