Chris O'Connell will still feature in the main draw of the Adelaide International despite compatriot John Millman beating him in the final round of qualifying.

Millman, who received an Australian Open wildcard last week, beat O'Connell 6-3 7-6 (9-7) on Monday.

He'll play Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, while O'Connell progressed as a lucky loser and will meet American Tommy Paul.

Fellow Australian Jordan Thompson wasn't so lucky, denied a berth in the final tune-up event before the Australian Open thanks to a 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 loss to Swede Mikael Ymer.

In first-round clashes, it was a mixed bag for a trio of British players.

World No.27 and the tournament's fifth seed Dan Evans was beaten by American Mackenzie McDonald 7-5 7-5, while fellow Brit Kyle Edmund lost to Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4 7-5.

It was a better day for 21-year-old Jack Draper, who beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 6-2.

Draper will meet the winner of O'Connell and Paul in the tournament's second round.

Seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat American big-hitter Brandon Nakashima 6-2 7-6 (7-3) in the night session and will play either Millman or Ramos-Vinolas.
