John McGinn responds to pupil's brilliant letter to head teacher as Scotland star urges 'let the kids watch the game'

Scotland sensation John McGinn has backed calls to let the nation's kids watch their team at a national tournament after a 23-year absence.

Nobody of primary or secondary school age in the country was born when Craig Brown's side travelled for France '98 and it's sure to be an eye opener when Steve Clarke leads the country into Euro 2020 this summer.

But with Monday's opener against the Czech Republic kicking off at 2pm kids across the country face being unable to watch - as they'll be stuck in class.

Poppy, a pupil in Clydebank, wrote a convincing letter to headteacher Ms Crombie to screen the game.

In it she insisted: "Dear Ms Crombie, I'm writing this letter to give you some reasons why you should consider letting the school watch the Euro football competition.

"This competition may seem like a football game but it is so much more than that!

"This game could inspire so many children to follow their dreams, imagine the smile on our beautiful faces if Scotland scored a goal!

"My dad said that in 1998 he got to watch the World Cup in his primary school, so why shouldn't we?"

It would be hard enough for Ms Crombie to hold her nerve in the face of such strong arguments.

But now that one of the most popular footballers in the country has intervened, it seems inevitable the pupils will be tuning in.

Aston Villa star McGinn, currently at the team's Durham tournament base, found the Tweet and replied: "Some letter poppy and an even better school! Cmon Ms Crombie."

A poll on the school's Twitter account currently shows 96.8 per cent of respondents support the pupils.
