John McGinn makes Aston Villa return as Scotland star prepares for first game of 2020

Scotland star John McGinn has been named in the Aston Villa line up to mark his return to action for the first time in 2020.

The midfielder broke his ankle during Villa's 3-1 defeat to Southampton at the end of 2019 and was a major doubt for Scotland's Euro 2020 playoff against Israel.

He was expected to be back around that time but the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the season and McGinn has had six long months of waiting to make his return to action.

And he's straight back into Dean Smith's starting lineup in a midfield three alongside Douglas Luiz and Conor Hourihane.

But he won't be up against his Scotland team-mate John Fleck who misses out for Sheffield United through injury.

The former Rangers midfielder has been a key player for the Blades since their promotion to the Premier League.

McGinn might not be the only Scotland player to make a return from injury on Wednesday night though with Kieran Tierney's Arsenal in action later.

The left back also hasn't played since December when he dislocated his shoulder during an injury hit first season at the club.

But he's been back training for the Gunners and could play against Manchester City.
