John McGinn injury blow as Aston Villa star could be a doubt for Scotland's Euro 2020 play-off

Aston Villa star John McGinn could be a doubt for Scotland's crucial Euro 2020 play-off after he limped off with an ankle injury in the defeat to Southampton.

The former Hibs and St Mirren midfielder has become a key man for Dean Smith's side, and has carried that form to international level.

The 25-year-old has scored seven international goals in 2019 and will be a key part of Steve Clarke 's plans for the Euro 2020 play-off against Israel in March.

However he limped off after only seven minutes of today's 3-1 loss to the Saints and his club manager is pessimistic about the prognosis.

Smith said: "He has gone for an X-ray, it doesn't look good.

"He got his studs caught in the turf. We will wait and see."

Scotland take on Israel in a play-off match on March 26, before a potential final away to either Serbia or Norway.

McGinn has become a key figure in the team and scored a hat-trick against San Marino in the October international break.

He followed that up with a goal against Cyprus and a brace against Kazakhstan last month.
