John McCain, man of the left

The more I think about it, the more it seems odd that a man who claims that For Whom the Bell Tolls is his most beloved book ever (one he claims to have read over and over again) should take such a cavalier posture toward the leader of the contemporary Spanish left. Maybe the McCain who spoke to El Pais back in April is "the real McCain." Or maybe today's is. Who can know anymore? Maybe he didn't quite gather that his hero Robert Jordan was fighting with the left, and it's all Mark Salter's fault. Jesus, Salter! Next thing ya know you're gonna tell me that Nineteen Eight-Four was written by some pinko!!
