John Lundstram seals Rangers transfer on three year deal as Sheffield United free agent joins Premiership champions

Rangers have completed the signing on former Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram on a three-year contract.

The 27-year-old Englishman was a free agent after leaving the relegated Blades and Steven Gerrard has moved quickly to snap up his fellow Scouser.

Lundstram spent four years at Brammall Lane after joining in a £700,000 deal from Oxford United and helped the Yorkshire side win promotion to the English Premier League.

They defied the odds to finish ninth in the top flight but couldn’t build on that as they dropped back down to the Championship.

Lundstram first came onto Rangers’ radar last season when it was revealed he would likely see out his contract at Sheffield United at a time when he fell out of the first team picture.

And he's delighted to commit his long-term future to Ibrox as he gears up for a big season with his new club.

Speaking to Rangers TV, he said: I spoke with the manager and he sold the club to me, and I was just taken aback by his ambition, vision and drive.

"I know Glasgow is like Liverpool - a proper football city with proper football fans, and I know the people are very similar and I am buzzing to be a part of the atmosphere I am moving into.

"The chance to work with Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister, as well as Michael Beale, was a huge draw.

"The manager is from the same area as me, and I want to learn from those coaches and become a better version of myself and continue to develop under them.

"As an outsider looking in, the scenes last season were unbelievable when the club won the league, and when I saw that, I knew I wanted to be a part of it and be a part of a club which wins more trophies for Rangers.

"There is something special still being built here and there is more to come. The pull of being in the Champions League was also massive for me and I want to help the team reach the group stage and make the most of that opportunity."

A box-to-box midfielder, he has never hidden his admiration for Light Blues boss Gerrard despite coming through the ranks at the Liverpool legend’s former city rivals Everton.

In a previous interview, Lundstram said: “Steven Gerrard was my role model. To see a local lad playing in Liverpool’s first team was something that every young Scouser wanted to be.

“The way he played, the way you could see his passion on the pitch rubbed off on every young Scouser.

“If you look at a lot of sporting people from Liverpool we’re quite similar, we don’t really get above ourselves. That might be the working-class city we come from.”

Gerrard has already bolstered his midfield by adding Nnamdi Ofoborh who signed a pre-contract from Bournemouth last season before being loaned out to Wycombe Wanderers.

However, there has been speculation over a potential departure for Glen Kamara who has been linked with a string of top clubs.

Gerrard and sporting director Ross Wilson are pushing ahead of their side's Champions League qualifying tilt with two rounds of qualifying lying in wait before the group stage.
