John Lundstram handed Rangers 'red card' verdict as Ryan Porteous tackle comparison addressed

Alex Rae reckons there is no comparison between Rangers star John Lundstram's challenge on Josh Doig and Ryan Porteous' sending off.

Hibs star Porteous was given his marching orders in the first half by Nick Walsh for a reckless challenge on Joe Aribo.

The challenge has been heavily debated by pundits and punters over the use of "excessive force" in the challenge.

That has now seen Rangers man Lundstram dragged into the argument after a firm tackle in the opening exchanges of the Premiership clash.

The midfielder came away with the ball following a sliding tackle on Doig inside the opening five minutes, with the whistler Walsh deciding to against taking any action at the time.

Former Ibrox star Rae fielded questions comparing the two incidents on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, but insisted there wasn't a debate to be had.

He said: "He clearly lunges towards the ball, but if you are talking about endangering him, I didn't quite see the same as Porteous.

"I don't think it was anywhere near the same force as Porteous, and I don't think it's reckless because he's on that side of the ball.

"I didn't quite see the two of them marry up."

When asked if he did acknowledge a lunge was there from the Rangers player, Rae responded: "100 per cent."

When pushed on a comparison by a caller, he added finally: "I don't think anybody recognised that it was a red card at the time.

"We were watching it live and I don't think anybody looked at that and said 'oh that's a really bad tackle'."

Hibs have taken the challenge to the SFA, lodging an appeal over the red card incident.

Rae took a swipe at Porteous following the news, calling for Hibs to take a firmer stance.

He said: “By appealing the decision, they are trying to get the guy off with it but at some point they need to look at the behaviour that he’s producing on a regular basis.

“I think Jack Ross has an obligation to try and take that part of his game out of it.”
