John Lundstram Rangers red card evaluation as Michael Stewart issues Ryan Porteous 'same logic' verdict

Pundit Michael Stewart reckons John Lundstram could have received the same red card punishment as Ryan Porteous at Ibrox.

Hibs star Porteous was given his marching orders in the first half at Ibrox by Nick Walsh for a reckless challenge on Joe Aribo.

The incident has proven to be a hot topic among pundits and supporters, with some feeling it was only a yellow card offence.

By the letter of the law, the 22-year-old would have had to use "excessive force" to be shown a straight red.

The fallout has seen Rangers midfielder Lundstram dragged into the debate for an early clash with Josh Doig.

Stewart insists that neither challenge in his view should have seen the player sent off, but believes the pair should have been held to the same standard.

The BBC pundit posted to Twitter: "The whole Porteous red card story has grown arms and legs.

"I don’t think trying to claim some sort of conspiracy does anyone any favours here. It wasn’t a horrific decision from Nick Walsh.

"I don’t agree with the red card but not sure this time it points to a deeper issue.

"The Lundstram tackle doesn’t look as bad as Porteous, but if you use the same logic for Porteous to be a red then it applies to Lundstram too.

"To be clear neither are a red card for me.

"Porteous is a very talented young player who is continuing to get better, he has a hard streak which needs to keep being channeled and evolve.

"Some of the comments about him are way off mark. He’s at a great club with a top manager who is perfect to keep helping him grow."
