John Lewis uncovers what Brits are buying online after midnight

Shops don't really close any more - at least not online. And that ability to buy things 24 hours a day, 356 days a year, is something Brits have embraced.

In fact, nocturnal shopping has risen by almost a quarter in the past year alone, figures form John Lewis show.

John Lewis' Mike Jackson said: "More customers are shopping on their smartphones and tablet computers and it would appear many are using this technology to shop from the comfort of their own beds."

But who's shopping then and what are they buying? John Lewis decided to dig into data from its Partnership Card to find out.

They discovered that between midnight and 6am most shoppers are women, accounting for two-thirds of purchases.

Midnight shoppers spend around £35 a time - with men spending slightly more (£37) than women (£34).

As to where people shop, the most money is spent on holidays - with money going to travel agencies, hotels and airlines - followed by general retailers and supermarkets.

Digging deeper, John Lewis decided to take a look at the most common searches made by shoppers on its site between midnight and 6am too to find out the sort of products people want at that time of night.

A lot, as you might guess, revolved around sleeping - with beds, sofabeds and duvet covers all making the top 10.

Other top searches were a little harder to explain - with fridges, cameras and wallpaper also making the insomniac shopping list.
