John Lewis set to close shops and axe jobs under new plans

John Lewis could close stores and cut jobs under new plans.

The department store has said 'it is highly unlikely we will reopen all our John Lewis stores' after they were forced to close following the coronavirus lockdown.

Around 20 stores have however returned after non-essential retailers were given the green light to reopen on June 15.

"The reality is that we have too much store space for the way people want to shop now and we have shared this with our Partners," the company told Mirror Money.

"As difficult as it is, it is highly unlikely we will reopen all our John Lewis stores. However no decision has been made and any details would be shared with Partners first by the middle of July."

At the start of the Covid crisis, John Lewis warned it was unlikely all 50 of its department stores would reopen after the lockdown.

Huge queues flood high streets and outlets across England as stores reopen

Plans to open a further 10 stores were announced today, including Oxford Street on July 13.

Stores in Basingstoke, Cardiff, Chelmsford, Chester, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Stratford and the Trafford Centre will be the next to reopen - followed by Oxford Street on July 16.

This will take the total number of shops that have so far reopened following the easing of the lockdown to 32.

Bérangère Michel, at John Lewis, said; "I am really pleased to announce more shop openings in the next couple of weeks, and in particular our first to reopen in Wales and Scotland.

"We continue to stick to our safe, not fast approach. We are learning as we go and tweaking our approach to give our customers and Partners the best possible experience."
