John Lewis latest chain hit by trouble as company slides to multi-million pound loss

John Lewis is the latest high street retailer to incur massive losses this year.

The department store chain, which has a big store at Cribbs Causeway, has reported a half-year loss of £25.9million - down from profit of £0.8million last year.

Sir Charlie Mayfield, chair of the John Lewis Partnership, blamed the retail landscape and uncertainty around Brexit.

He said: “Should the UK leave the EU without a deal, we expect the effect to be significant and it will not be possible to mitigate that impact.”

Sir Charlie also said the company had been preparing for the UK's withdrawal from the European Union by stockpiling where possible, but believes Brexit continues to weigh on consumer sentiment at a "crucial time" for the sector.

However, Sir Charlie did point out that the second half of the year is always stronger for the retailer.

"Although we expect retail conditions to remain challenging, we are pressing on with key areas of innovation such as Waitrose Unpacked and the renewal of key ranges in areas like Menswear and Home," he added.

The group, which also owners Waitrose & Partners, said it only saw a “marginal” decline in like-for-like grocery sales and saw "strong online growth" for the supermarket of 10.7 per cent.

Sir Charlie also pointed out the success of Waitrose Unpacked - a trial to remove packaging from more than 200 products to allow customers to fill their own reusable containers.

In March this year, staff bonuses at John Lewis were slashed to the lowest level in 66 years.
