It's one of those unlikely coincidences that has you slapping your forehead with the wonder of it all. The acclaimed John Lewis ad – you know, the one that makes it almost worthwhile not skipping through the ads – bears a striking resemblance to a commercial for the Italian lingerie firm Calzedonia, right down to the choice of music, Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman. Has to be said the John Lewis ad is rather more refined, and features fewer stocking tops. A spokesman for John Lewis said its ad agency, Adam & Eve, "in no way copied anything in the making of our ad". "I think it is fair to say that using the idea of following a journey from childhood to a later stage in life is far from unique in the world of advertising," she told the News of the World. Or in film, as anyone who has seen Pixar's Up will attest, with its memorable opening four-minute montage of Carl and Ellie. Tears all round.
