Speculation is rife over the release date for the 2018 John Lewis Christmas advert and the internet has been sent into a frenzy over a clip which some suggest gives a first glimpse of the ad.
Excited fans of the infamous adverts were speculating over whether a clip of an astronaut playing the piano next to a Christmas tree was a teaser trailer for this year’s advert.
A video posted on Twitter showed a bauble with a spaceman hanging from a Christmas tree next to what appears to be an astronaut playing the start of Elton John’s Rocket Man on the piano.
Posting the clip on Twitter, one John Lewis fan said: “This has got to mean Elton! Christmas is officially here.”
John Lewis has since told the Standard that this is not a clip from their 2018 Christmas advert.
Speculation over the short video comes amid reports that Sir Elton John has reportedly been paid £5 million to appear in this year’s advert, which make up half of the advert’s £10 million budget.
A source close to the production allegedly told The Mail on Sunday that the Christmas advert will chart the course of the singer’s life and is a “tear-jerker”.
"It is all very, very charming and the exciting crescendo at the end will be Elton playing his famous piano,” the paper quotes the source as saying.
Filming reportedly took place over four days at Pinewood Studios.
Speaking to the Standard, a John Lewis spokeswoman said they were not currently releasing any information about the advert or the date it will appear on televisions across the UK.
