John Lewis children's Christmas toy recall announced amid 'risk of choking'

(Tony Buckingham/John Lewis/PA) - (PA Media)

Regulators have issued a recall over a children’s Christmas toy sold at John Lewis over concerns of a ‘choking hazard’.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) released a recall notice on December 24, as it may pose a risk to kids playing with the toy.

Families who bought the John Lewis & Partners Wooden Roast Dinner Toy set before Christmas are now being encouraged to return it to their nearest store.

Here’s what you need to know.

The wooden playset features colourful items representing food, as well as a wooden tray and a wooden knife.

According to the OPSS, the Wooden Roast Dinner Toy set is being recalled because of a choking hazard associated with the hook-and-loop fastening.

The hook and loop attached to the Chinese-manufactured product is at risk of detaching and could be swallowed by babies and children.

“The product presents a risk of choking as the hook and loop fastening (Velcro) can detach during reasonably foreseeable use, creating a small part,” the recall says.

It continues: “These small parts pose a choking hazard to young children, particularly those under 36 months of age who have a natural tendency to explore objects by placing them in their mouths.”

As a result, the product is being recalled.

What to do if a product is recalled

It’s best to keep an eye on recall pages such as the OPSS to make sure any purchases aren’t being recalled.

In this instance, shoppers should refrain from allowing their kids to play with this product and try to return it to John Lewis as soon as possible.

You’re entitled to a full refund in this case.

“We recommend that consumers stop using the product immediately and keep it away from babies and young children. Return it to your local John Lewis & Partners store for a full refund,” the recall announcement says.

The John Lewis announcement adds: “We’re very sorry that it has been necessary to recall this product, and for the inconvenience caused.”
