John Lewis asked about future of Cardiff store after speculation eight more shops could close

John Lewis has refused to comment on the future of its Cardiff store after reports of the chain planning more closures.

Bosses at the department store chain are claimed to be considering closing up to eight shops. The Cardiff store in St David's Shopping Centre is one of the largest in the city centre, and has been popular with shoppers since it opened in September, 2009.

The news of more shops possibly shutting comes on top of eight store closures announced by the worker-owned group last July, leading to 1,300 job losses. The firm, which also owns supermarket chain Waitrose, is also in the process of cutting a further 1,500 head office jobs.

According to the Sunday Times, the final number of closures is yet to be decided and will depend on negotiations with landlords. Older shops are said to be most at risk of shutting permanently.

When approached by WalesOnline for a statement specifically on the Cardiff store, John Lewis said the Sunday Times report was "speculative" and something it would not comment on.

The chain currently has 42 stores across the UK. It announced a £635million loss in 2020, with the pandemic hitting sales.

Last yer the 156-year-old department store announced 1,500 redundancies with all workers set to leave the company by April. Bosses said the move was part of a five-year transformation plan to "return to sustainable profits by 2025".

A spokesman said the job cuts would affect head office roles, with workers set to be made redundant or redeployed.
