John Lewis apologise after children reduced to tears by Edgar the dragon in new Christmas advert

The John Lewis Christmas advert was released this week and many people fell in love with the adorably clumsy Edgar the dragon .

The advert sees Edgar accidentally setting fire to everything in his village including a snowman and a Christmas tree, leaving him a social outcast.

Thankfully his only friend Ava helps him put his fire breathing skills to good use and the tale has a happy ending.

But not everyone is a big fan of the advert. While John Lewis may have thought a dragon would be a sure hit with younger viewers, the commercial has left some children in tears, reports the MEN .

One parent posted on Twitter about how her little girl was left ‘distraught’ after she thought Edgar had melted Olaf the snowman from Frozen.

The mum said: "Absolutely love Edgar. Unfortunately my 2 year old is distraught that Edgar melted Olaf."

John Lewis responded to the tweet, and apologised.

A spokesperson for the brand tweeted: "Oh no, Emma! Sorry to hear that your little one was unhappy with Edgar, he was only trying to [help] Olaf.

"I'll have a word with Edgar; I hope he changes his ways, or Elsa he will be sent to the naughty corner!"

Others shared how they had sobbed after watching the story unfold. One said: “This is too SAD. The happy ending doesn't make up for the rest of it being so sad. Poor Edgar," said another disgruntled viewer.

"Why have I started crying over a dragon called Edgar," asked somebody else.

A third added: "It’s 9:40 in the morning and John Lewis has had me ugly crying."
