John Legend 'wasn't a great partner' to Chrissy Teigen at the start of their romance

John Legend has reflected on the early days of his romance with Chrissy Teigen and admitted he 'wasn't a great partner' when they first started dating.

The power couple first met back in 2006 and they instantly hit it off, with 43-year-old John popping the question in 2011. The couple tied the knot two years later.

Since then, they have welcomed two children together – Luna, six, and Miles, four. 36-year-old Chrissy is currently pregnant, having undergone IVF treatment to expand their brood.

Despite things between them seeming unbreakable, John has said he was "selfish" at the beginning of their relationship and acknowledged that he wasn't ready to fully commit to Chrissy.

"I think I was more selfish then. I wasn't a great partner at the beginning of our relationship.

"Even though I was very into her and very excited to be with her. I was still selfish.

"I was in my mid-20s, still not ready to fully be the committed partner that I am now," he said during an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast.

John said he was later able to understand what he wanted from the relationship and the amount of effort he needed to put in.

"When you stop being so selfish when you think about not only the joy you get from a situation and the pleasure you get from it, but also think about your responsibility and your commitment in that situation, you just grow, and you mature," he said.

"Part of it is it's just a matter of time. You need time to become that person you want to be.

"I think in your mid-20s you're still dealing with impulse control, you're still dealing with selfishness, you're still figuring out what you want to do in your career, all these things are happening.

"But when you figure these things out you can just be a better person in general."

John said he and Chrissy were both "very attracted to each other" when they first met, but said it was more "infatuation" in the beginning.

The musician added: "We've been through enough together where it's really fortified us and made us stronger."
