John Legend and Kelly Clarkson re-write Baby It's Cold Outside for the #MeToo era

John Legend and Kelly Clarkson have taken on the challenge of re-writing Christmas song Baby It’s Cold Outside for the #MeToo era.

Legend and Clarkson, both judges on The Voice USA, have teamed up to re-write the classic festive track, which has been under scrutiny in recent years.

The US singers updated the words to the tune, originally written in 1944, after a radio station banned it from playlists last year.

The original duet includes alternate lines between a man and a woman, where he tries to convince her not to risk a journey home in bad weather.

Instead, he says she should have another drink and spend the night with them.

According to Vanity Fair, Legend and Clarkson’s updated version includes the lines: “What will my friends think? (I think they should rejoice) / If I have one more drink? (It’s your body and your choice).”

The new version of Baby, It’s Cold Outside will feature on Legend’s festive album A Legendary Christmas.

Legend revealed the new lyrics during an interview with the US publication, adding he also collaborated on the track with Natasha Rothwell - a comedian known for her work on Saturday Night Live and Insecure.

Last year a radio station in Ohio stopped playing Baby, It’s Cold Outside after some listeners said the song was inappropriate.

Star 102 host Glenn Anderson said at the time that he recognised society was different when the song was released but did not think the track has a place on modern Christmas playlists.
