John Krasinski and Emily Blunt tease plot details of A Quiet Place sequel

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt have begun giving viewers a taste of what's to come when A Quiet Place returns.

Krasinski is currently working on a follow-up to his science fiction horror hit, which came out in April to rave reviews and surpassed $300 million at the worldwide box office within a month.

The film followed two parents and their children as they tried to survive in a world populated by bloodthirsty aliens with hypersensitive hearing, having learned to live in complete silence.

The next instalment could take several directions, as explained by the married pair at the 2018 SCAD Savannah Film Festival. Blunt, who plays Krasinski's wife in A Quiet Place, pointed out that the upcoming movie could just as well explore the characters' past in a prequel or take a look at what happens after the events of A Quiet Place.

"In some ways, the idea of seeing who these people were before this all happened would be interesting, but I'm not quite sure because I think actually it's now what’s the next chapter and what happens next," she told Entertainment Weekly.

"I think people feel very invested in this family. ... I think it's such an open book right now, and certainly for John who is lasering into something as we speak."

Krasinski, the director and co-writer of the original film, "didn't want anything to do with the sequel" at first but ended up getting a "very small idea" that has now blossomed into a full-blown project. He confirmed last month that he would be writing the sequel to A Quiet Place.

"This is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake... it's actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience," he said in Savannah. "It’s not like Alien or Jaws where the main villain is the thing you’re repeating; it's an actual entire set of rules and the circumstance that the world has undergone that you can play in very different facets."

The new film is scheduled to come out on 15 May 2020.

Krasinski previously told The Independent he would consider letting someone else direct the movie.

“I could totally see myself handing over the reins to someone else,” he said. “It’s really just about finding the right story."

He added: "I know Paramount announced it and really want to do one. I really credit them with allowing us to very gently get in the water; it’s really nice of them to do because a lot of places would just make it. We’re really trying to find a story that feels very connected [to the first one]."
