John Kierans: Covid response is reason we’re in this awful mess

So now we know NPHET’s big plan to stop Covid-19 is very simple – it doesn’t have one.

The bare truth was exposed when we went into a second lockdown and then the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar let slip for the first time last Sunday the Government’s exit strategy – delay and vaccinate the whole population.

If we are lucky we might have one by late spring ( just pray it happens).

Until then, it is the Dr Holohan and Professor Nolan show with lockdown after lockdown telling us, like children, to behave ourselves or else.

This despite the World Health Organisation having said restrictions should only be used as a last resort to get your house in order because of the damage it does to the overall population.

They also base their decisions on data most of which is never put into the public domain. There are 32 people in NPHET and because they are an advisory body there is no accountability.

They are all health insiders, 12 are employed by the Department of Health, 10 by the HSE and most of the rest come from the HIQA.

All bloody well paid and none of them on the PUP – the pandemic unemployment payments.

They are all unelected and yet they are making decisions that affect all our lives and are going to define this country for years to come.

Fact: We have the most severe restrictions in Europe and the seventh most stringent measures in the world.

We are told our sacrifice is needed in case the public health system is overwhelmed. That is true, but whose fault is it?

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar (Crispin Rodwell/The Irish Times/PA Wire)

Remember the Government and the health authorities had eight months and the first four-month lockdown to get it right – and failed.

Instead, the country’s whole contact tracing system, as we discovered last week, has collapsed. This was to be
our most important weapon in fighting the virus.

The 300 extra ICU beds needed in case Covid got out of control were also never sorted. So, yes, you are
entitled to ask what in hell is going on?

And yet Dr Holohan, Prof Nolan and the Government spin it that this second lockdown is all our fault.

We the people are out of control by not following the rules and they, the establishment, have done nothing wrong.

What rubbish.

Dr Holohan says we shouldn’t engage in the blame game. Really? Well, it is a bit late for that.

I resent losing my liberty, I resent my friends losing their jobs, businesses and possibly their homes.

I resent our elderly being left lonely and isolated, I resent not being able to see my family. I resent the deaths in our nursing homes which left more than 1,000 dead and could have been prevented if those in charge had done their jobs properly.

Like the vast majority of you, I will comply with the new restrictions because I am not stupid and I realise Covid is out of control again.

But this is the fault of the State, not our citizens.

I, like you, don’t want to see any more deaths from this horrible disease.

But everything needs to be put in perspective and be under no illusion more people will die of cancer than Covid-19 in this country.

Whatever we do we can’t keep locking down, there has to be a better way.

The Government and NEPHET must give us hope, a roadmap and a light to guide us the way home.

We need to be the Republic of dreams again not the Republic of despair.

It’s so sad isn’t it Fungie the dolphin has disappeared from Dingle.

He was part and parcel of the Co Kerry town for over 37 years where he brought a smile to everyone’s face.

All is not lost in the Kingdom though as they still have a few legends left. There is no sign of either Michael Healy- Rae or Danny Healy-Rae disappearing from public life anytime soon!

These boys are dinosaurs compared to the dolphin.

What are we going to do in the media if Donald loses the US election? Who will we write about, he has been box office?

Polls have Democrat Joe Biden ahead but it is far too
close to call. The coverage here is anti-Trump so it is hard to get a handle on how the campaign is really going.

I just hope to God US voters tell former US Apprentice star Donald: “You’re fired.”

Kegs floated through the city centre streets of Cork as high tide brought with it heavy flooding (CorkBeo.ie)

What a resilient people they are down in Cork, one of my favourite places in Ireland.

For the umpteenth time, the city centre was flooded but within 24 hours it was business as usual.

More pedestrianised streets is the way forward for the whole country and letting bars and restaurants put tables and chairs out front like in Princess Street is what is needed.

The Cork flooding needs to be stopped once and for and the €7million project to fix it must get the immediate go-ahead.

Golf is the one game Covid-19 doesn’t affect. You can walk for miles on 200 acres and keep your social distance.

It was a pathetic decision by Green Party Sports Minister Catherine Martin to exclude it under the Level 5 restrictions.

Golf is brilliant for the fitness
and mental health of tens of thousands of elderly people.

The Greens can forget about coming to my door for a vote.
