John Kennedy urges Celtic stars to use Rangers hurt to inspire next season fightback

Interim boss John Kennedy has urged hurting Celtic stars to use it as inspiration to mount a fightback next season.

Rangers were officially crowned champions after the Hoops dropped points at Tannadice meaning it's impossible for them to claw back the lead held by the Ibrox side.

Kennedy admitted it's been a difficult year but he insists the 'dominant' team in Scottish football in recent years can get back on top next season.

Kennedy insisted Rangers were deserving champions in a season where they cruised to the league title and clinched it in March.

But he wants the likes of Callum McGregor and the rest of his Celtic team to use it as inspiration going forward.

He said: "I hope it does a lot. Ultimately we’ve been champions for so long and had so much success and not just in the league, domestically through the cup competitions.

"At some points you have a blip in terms of a setback and we’ve had that this season. We’ve not been good enough and I won’t shy away from that, but it’s not about giving up. It’s not about standing back and letting someone else dominate.

"In terms of recent times, we’ve still been the dominant team. We want to get back on the course as soon as we can.

"I don’t think we’ll need much fuel going into a game like that but we’ll just have to approach it when it comes.

"Our objective at the start of the season was to get to 10 and it hasn’t happened for a number of reasons but ultimately Rangers were better than us over the course of the season. Simple as that.

"They’ve deserved to win it this year so we’ve just got to get on with it."

Celtic dominated much of the game against Dundee United but Kennedy admitted that it wasn't good enough in the final third to claim all three points.

"Disappointed we didn’t win with the number of chances we had.

"That’s what has let us down in the end and the game became stretched in the end because we put several attacking players on the pitch because we’ve got nothing to lose so we went for it.

"The game became a bit stretched but for 75/80 minutes we were totally dominant and created big chances but you’ve got to take them to win the game.

"They’ll look at it and say the goalie was great and he was but we’ve got to be finishing them. At half time we should be two or three up easy.

"The opportunities we had we just have to be more clinical in terms of in front of goal.

"At other times we rushed things when we didn’t have to. We could have pinned them in and really worked in the final third.

"We’ve got to work through that. Creating opportunities is great but you just have to have the final bit whether that’s the final ball or the finish and we didn’t have it today.

"It’s partly down to confidence as well. If we scored in the first half you’d have seen a totally different team. I thought our general play was good but just couldn’t finish it off."
