John Kennedy's Celtic tactics branded 'baffling' as Michael Stewart says he played to Rangers strengths

Michael Stewart branded John Kennedy's tactics "baffling" as the pundit struggled to understand the reaction of the interim boss to going down to 10 men.

Celtic had Callum McGregor sent off early on against Rangers on Sunday, and eventually succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at Ibrox.

And while he understands that the visitors were a man down, Stewart was left scratching his head over Kennedy's approach.

Highlighting an incident in which Greg Taylor played a ball inside rather than making a run, the pundit felt the problems ran deeper than an individual incident.

Stewart said on BBC Sportscene: "Even if he goes in there: what was it Celtic were going to do there?

"Davis is somebody that shields, they close down, they win the ball back.

"What they should have done, in my opinion, is close down the full-back areas with your wide players, go 4-4-1 with Edouard as your striker and get Edouard to sit on Steven Davis.

"Then when you break and you win the possession, which is the key thing against Rangers when you transition, you've got two wide players that go and attack those areas in between Simpson and Barasic on one side, and on the other side Goldson and Tavernier.

"I just looked at it and I wasn't sure what the tactics were.

"Even John Kennedy after the game saying they were giving up the wide areas - I found that baffling.

"That's where Rangers are strong!"
