John Kennedy laughs off Celtic tee-up as interim boss insists Aberdeen rout was never going to happen

John Kennedy laughed off a suggestion that he could now throw his hat in the ring to become permanent Celtic boss.

The interim manager secured a winning start on Saturday as Odsonne Edouard's deflected early strike saw off Aberdeen at Parkhead.

Kennedy admitted he found it slightly stressful moving from sideman to main man after stepping into the breach following Neil Lennon's resignation.

But he brushed away a one-two interview punch on whether the victory was an audition.

Asked if he enjoyed the experience, Kennedy replied: "Yeah... why not? Bit stressful, but it was good."

That led to a query on whether the victory meant he'd stated an early case for the job, he laughed: "Far too early for that, no chance!"

Kennedy reckons Celtic responded well to an "emotional week" and he expressed gratitude to the players for helping him step up in the club's time of need.

He said: "Everbody was working for the cause there.

"Naturally, it's been an emotional week. And as much as you want a bit of free-flowing football, scoring as many goals as you can, it's very unlikely that's going to happen because of the stress and everything else.

"I think you saw second-half with the energy going a little bit so we made a few changes to keep the team fresh.

"But credit to them as a team, it's a tough week to come through for anybody. They've been a massive help to me coming into this position, they've given me real belief in what we do and in terms of that encouragement that everybody is together.

"We can build on that."
