John Kennedy admits Celtic disappointment but insists Rennes clash was all about fitness

John Kennedy admits Celtic were disappointed not to grab a goal or two against Rennes but reckons the team got what they needed out of it.

The Hoops coach watched on as his side failed to break down the Ligue 1 outfit, although Scott Sinclair did miss a second half sitter.

But Kennedy insists all that matters is that fitness levels had been boosted for some of the more fringe players after a tough game in midweek against Sarajevo.

Celtic included the likes of Craig Gordon, Anthony Ralston, Jonny Hayes, Ewan Henderson, Lewis Morgan and Leigh Griffiths while youngsters such as Conor Hazard and Karamoko Dembele made second half appearances.

Kennedy said: "It's one where we had a plan to get some guys some game time. Some that maybe didn't have it in the last week.

"Some who were playing midweek in a tough game on a heavy pitch so we had to protect some so we got out of it what we need.

"It's a big game for fitness levels in terms of getting some momentum a bit of sharpness back leading us into the qualification campaign.

"It was very much worthwhile, disappointing we didn't get some goals or more action in the box but ultimately the fitness will be a big benefit from it."

Christopher Jullien and Luca Connell made their first Celtic appearances after their summer moves but Kennedy was happy with their performances and what they offered.

He added: "For him (Jullien) it’s about getting the fitness and sharpness back. But in terms of where he was when he came in and where he is now, he’s looking good.

"Luca is a guy who’s got talent. He’s a young player that comes into a club like Celtic that can develop him."
