John Kelly talks skateboarding passion, why it’s harder than football

John Kelly is a lesser-known member of the Los Angeles Rams, joining the team as a sixth-round pick in 2018. He’s third on the depth chart behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown, so he doesn’t get much attention in L.A.

He has an interesting personality and is already one of the favorites in the locker room after just one season, lifting the spirits of everyone on the team. His passion for skateboarding is also unlike most other players in the NFL, but it’s something he’s been interested in since he was younger.

In a video for The Berrics, Kelly talks about skating, how it’s helped him grow as a person and its connection to football.

He believes he’s the first NFL player who can actually skate, which he takes pride in. The coaches are mostly OK with him skateboarding in his free time, though they do crack jokes about it and his safety.

“To be honest, I really think I’m probably the first football player who can skate. I get to skate pretty much anytime I want,” Kelly said. “Usually the coaches crack jokes every now and then like, ‘Make sure you’re not on that board or you’re not skating or anything like that.’ Coach McVay was asked about it and he was pretty confident in my abilities on my board. He doesn’t know about the little scratches I get every now and then when I try to do something. They don’t really trip about it too much.”

Kelly was asked which is harder: football or skating?

“Skating. A football player can’t get on a skateboard but I’m pretty sure a skateboarder can go and run a route. Skating is definitely harder.”
