John Kavanagh addresses Conor McGregor's UFC retirement and what the future holds

John Kavanagh believes Conor McGregor really has retired from MMA.

The Notorious announced his retirement from the sport for the third time in four years earlier this month after watching UFC 250.

Explaining the reasons why, McGregor said: "The game just does not excite me, and that’s that.

“All this waiting around. There’s nothing happening. I’m going through opponent options, and there’s nothing really there at the minute. There’s nothing that’s exciting me."

A lot of people believe believe that the Dubliner will fight again, but his coach believes the former two-weight champion really has hung up his gloves.

Speaking on a live chat, Kavanagh said: “Is Conor retired? Yes, he is as far as I can tell. That’s what he said, isn’t it?”

The Straight Blast Gym supremo also stated that he wouldn't be able to convince McGregor to step back in to the Octagon.

He added: “I can’t convince Conor to do sh**. Conor will tell Conor what he’s gonna do. And who knows? Who knows what’s gonna happen in the future. But, as for now, he’s retired.”

Meanwhile, McGregor has been warned that the UFC will not give in and hand him a title shot if he decides to come out of retirement.

Despite being the promotion's biggest star, the Crumlin native one has plenty of contenders vying for a crack at UFC gold - meaning an immediate title shot isn't in the works.

And he's now been warned that the UFC won't bow down to their biggest name - despite the possibility of him walking away from the sport for good looming large.

Dan Hooker, who was beaten in a five-round thriller against Dustin Poirier in the early hours of Sunday morning, thinks that the UFC will stand their ground.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense with what we’re seeing now with the UFC kind of standing their ground with a lot of these big-named guys who want to kind of call the shots, and the UFC’s jumping back in and saying we’re the ones running the show," Hooker told  MMA Fighting.

“So I don’t think that benefits Conor very well, if he’s going to try to position himself for a title shot when compared to me.

“You’re seeing it now with Gilbert Burns - Usman fight. Jorge Masvidal was obviously the clear frontrunner for that title shot, but contract negotiations turned south and the UFC gave it to the guy who wants to fight.”
