John Johnson III thinks Grant Delpit can be a top safety

As Cleveland Browns training camp moved into day two, safety John Johnson III spent some time answering questions from the media. Johnson’s first year with the team didn’t go as many had hoped with a struggle to adjust to the system in the first half of the year.

Johnson, along with the rest of the defense, really started to put it together in the second half of the season providing hope for 2022. The Browns return most of their critical starters while adding depth at important positions.

In the safety room, Ronnie Harrison was brought back for a year while Grant Delpit gets his first full offseason with the team. As noted yesterday, Cleveland has high hopes for Delpit. Johnson didn’t shy away from heaping expectations on the third-year safety out of LSU:

It was a surprise to many when Delpit fell to the second round. He has the size, speed and explosive ability to be a controlling force all over the field. His Achilles injury took away his rookie season and slowed his return to full throttle early last year.

In the final four games that he played, Delpit played almost every snap after being limited to around 50% or less of the team’s defensive snaps most of the season.

With Johnson more comfortable and Delpit getting a full offseason, the Browns have a couple of dynamic players on the backend. Harrison’s return adds another option for Joe Woods as well.
