John Johnson getting 2nd opinion on shoulder, could miss ‘extended time’

In one press conference, Sean McVay announced two players being placed on injured reserve and another two battling injuries of their own. Joseph Noteboom is out for the year with a torn ACL and MCL, and Aqib Talib (ribs) is being placed on IR, sidelining him for at least eight weeks.

To make matters worse, safety John Johnson could also be out for a while depending on the severity of his shoulder injury, which he suffered on Sunday against the 49ers. McVay said Johnson is getting a second opinion on Tuesday.

“John Johnson is going to get his shoulder evaluated,” McVay said. “There’s a possibility (he’ll need surgery). Really, he’s got to get an MRI, he’s going to get a second opinion and we’ll be able to have some updates on that after tomorrow.”

As for Johnson’s availability for Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons, he’s far from certain to play. The Rams are still evaluating his injury and if it requires surgery, he’d be sidelined for an extended period of time, presumably.

“I think that’s something that could potentially come up,” McVay said of Johnson missing week 7. “Before he gets that second opinion, I want to wait out of respect for him and just wait to see what he says and what comes from that. … “That second opinion will predicate whether he’s available or he might end up missing some extended time.”

Johnson is undeniably one of the best players on the entire team and a leader in the secondary. He’s a sure tackler and excellent in coverage against tight ends, which makes this a big loss on defense.
