John Higgins record title bid ended after exit from British Open

John Higgins' quest for a record-breaking fifth British Open title ended with defeat to Ricky Walden.

The wizard of Wishaw failed to capitalise on some good opportunities as Walden punished some uncharacteristic mistakes with a 3-1 win.

Higgins claimed the first frame with a break of 51 but the 46-year-old couldn't replicate his early tournament form as Walden won the next three frames to advance to the last 16.

Higgins was defending his British Open title after a 17-year absence after the tournament was removed from the snooker schedule.

It will still be a memorable tournament for Higgins as he eclipsed fellow Scot Stephen Hendry with his 12th career 147 break in his first round win over Alexander Ursenbacher.
