John Higgins hits 147 in first frame of British Open title defence

John Higgins started his British Open title defence in style this afternoon with an incredible 147 maximum in the first frame of his first round match.

The Wizard of Wishaw - a four-time -world champion - pocketed his 12th career maximum with a perfect showing against Swiss opponent Alexadner Ursenbacher at the Morningside Area in Leicester, where the tournament has returned after a 17-year hiatus.

Higgins, 46, is the reigning champion in the event after beating fellow Scotsman Stephen Maguire 9-6 in 2004.

And his feat this afternoon sees him overtake countryman Stephen Hendry in the 147 rankings to move into second spot in the all-time standings, leaving him three behind of Ronnie O'Sullivan's record of 15 maximums.
