John Hartson slams Celtic 'Sunday League' defending and warns they won't win anything with ropey rearguard

John Hartson slammed Celtic’s ropey rearguard and warned his old club they won’t win anything defending as they did in the Czech Republic.

Ange Postecoglou won his first game as Hoops boss with a 4-2 victory over FK Jablonec to put one foot in the Europa League play-off round.

But former striker Hartson launched a blistering attack on their defensive play and branded it Sunday League standard.

Carl Starfelt was singled out after a rocky night and poor play at Jablonec’s second goal late on before substitute Ryan Christie headed in the final minute to give Celtic some breathing space.

Celtic had raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Liel Abada and Kyogo Furuhashi.

But the home side were allowed to score a simple goal to get back into it before James Forrest restored their two-goal lead.

And they conceded again before Christie’s goal and BBC pundit Hartson fumed: “Celtic won’t win anything defending like that.

“Celtic had a chance to go away and win 4-0, 5-0. All they had to do was defend properly and it’s Sunday League stuff the goals they’re giving away.

“I know Carl Starfelt is early at the club but I’ve got to call it as I see it and you can’t just dive in in the last minute and let Malinsky cut back inside and lob Joe Hart.

“Should Joe Hart be that far off his line? I’m not usually over critical but I can’t accept that kind of defending – it’s going to cost Celtic.

“It’s a good away win but Celtic could have been out of sight. They should have taken the pressure off everyone next week.”
