John Hartson claims Rangers are repeating Celtic history as bewildered pundit brands title defenders 'inept'

John Hartson reckons Rangers are following the same title disappointment template that Celtic created last season.

The Welshman was a long-standing critic of the Parkhead management and dressing room last season after their nightmare campaign.

But following the dismal Premier Sports Cup display against Hibs, the former Celtic striker believes that the balance of power could be shifting.

He reckons the Ibrox side are taking lessons from Glasgow's east end in how not to defend the Scottish Premiership title.

Hartson told the Go Radio Football Show: "It reminded me of Celtic last season.

"Losing goals from set-pieces, nobody really taking responsibility in their own penalty area defensively, and it just looked similar.

"Last season Rangers conceded 13 goals and they were terrific defensively, where is that personal responsibility to go and head the ball? Where is that organisation? Why aren't they all in sync?

"The goals they were conceding last season, just 13 goals, and they have conceded more than that already.

"So they have got to have a good, hard look at themselves.

"It reminded me of Celtic last season. They were chopping and changing, didn't quite know their favourite team, they were making changes where you could question the substitutions at times.

"I know he was an interim manager (David McCallum), but it was just an inept performance on a day where Celtic are already in the final.

"They've got to be thinking that they want to match that result and play Celtic on December 19, but they didn't have enough punch. They never put up a fight, in my opinion.

"I was very, very surprised. I was one for last season saying Celtic are not at it and couple of players looked disinterested, and I'm seeing that at Rangers, and I can't put my finger on why."
