John Greig joins Rangers directors as club pay tribute to Ibrox Disaster victims

Rangers paid tribute to the victims of the Ibrox Disaster at a ceremony at the club's stadium on Thursday morning.

In 1971, 66 people lost their lives after a devastating tragedy which also saw more than 200 people injured.

John Greig was Rangers captain at the time and honoured the victims by laying a wreath outside the ground on Thursday morning.

The statue of Greig outside the stadium is a tribute to the 66 and was unveiled on the 30th anniversary of the disaster.

The Ibrox legend was joined by the club's managing director Stewart Robertson , as well as sporting director Ross Wilson and Graeme Park.

Robertson and Park read out the names of the 66 victims.

Supporters and other staff members were also in attendance as club chaplain Stuart McQuarrie led a service.

Nine-year-old Nigel Patrick Pickup was the youngest of the 66 who died on the tragic day.

The disaster led to a huge redevelopment of Ibrox with Rangers converting the stadium into an all-seater by 1981.

Next year - 2021 - will mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster, which happened at Stairway 13 following a match between Rangers and Celtic.
