John Goodman turned heads at the Los Angeles premiere of the new Smurfs film on Sunday, proudly showcasing his dramatic weight loss transformation.
The Roseanne star, 73, looked sharp in a navy blue suit, white-collared shirt, patterned tie, and brown dress shoes as he smiled for photographers on the blue carpet.
Goodman lends his voice to Papa Smurf in the upcoming animated film which also stars Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter and Billie Lourd.
Once weighing almost 181 kilos (400 lbs), according to the New York Post, Goodman has shed half his body weight, around 90 kilos (200 lbs) over the past decade.
His health journey began in 2007, when he weighed 392 pounds and made the decision to stop drinking.
Appearing on David Letterman in 2011, he shared: “I'd get off of Roseanne every spring. I'd lose 60 pounds every spring [but] I'd gain it back and then some, every year.

“It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”
Since then, he’s worked with a health coach, eliminated sugar from his diet, and adopted a workout routine that includes exercising six days a week.
He has been gradually shedding weight since his red carpet appearances in 2007, but it was at the 2023 Monte-Carlo TV Festival that he revealed a noticeably slimmer figure.
Speaking to ABC News in 2017, Goodman acknowledged a pattern of yo-yo dieting in the past, saying, “I would lose a lot of weight, then reward myself with a six-pack or whatever and just go back to old habits.”
“This time, I wanted to do it slowly,” he explained. “Move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore.”

Then the following year, in a 2018 interview with AARP, the Conners actor credited “portion control” as a key factor in his sustained progress.
“I was just shoving everything into my mouth,” he said.
“But I don’t want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner’s sugar.”
