Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck was taken to hospital after collapsing on the pitch during Tuesday’s Championship win at Reading.

The Scotland international fell with seemingly no one around him during the second half of the match at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, prompting huge concerns among players, coaches and fans.

Fleck received lengthy medical treatment and was then stretchered away to a waiting ambulance after being helped to his feet with an oxygen mask.

After the game, Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic confirmed that the 30-year-old was conscious and talking in hospital, with a further update expected on Wednesday morning.

Jokanovic said: "John is conscious, he is in the hospital, he is talking with the doctors and he is in good hands.

"We hope everything will be okay and we expect everything will be fine. He was talking and he asked for the result.

"I didn't really see the incident but it looked like he just collapsed, without any physical contact around him.

"I am not a doctor but the news is positive. It was not an easy situation for everybody."

Of the Fleck incident, Reading manager Veljko Paunovic said: "The experience we all had tonight was so dramatic and so horrible.

"I hope that John will return as soon as possible in good shape in his normal life, and to play football like he did before.

"Hopefully, there are no other consequences [for him] after this."

Sheffield United won the match 1-0 thanks to a second-half effort from Jayden Bogle.
