John Evans steps away from Wicklow football job

Wicklow are on the lookout for a new football manager with John Evans deciding to move on.

The Kerryman served two years in the job and has opted against seeking a third season from the county board.

A statement issued by the board on Twitter outlined: “John Evans has completed his two-year term as Wicklow senior football manager and will not be seeking another term. County chairman Martin Fitzgerald has expressed his thanks to John on behalf of Wicklow GAA and wished him the very best for the future.”

Wicklow failed to mount a promotion charge from Division Four under Evans and bar an extra time victory over Offaly in Leinster last year, they made little progress in the Championship either with a defeat to Leitrim in the qualifiers proving to be his last game in charge.

The much-travelled Evans has previously managed Tipperary and Roscommon while he was also part of Seamus McEnaney’s coaching team in Meath.

Meanwhile, the Westmeath county board is expected to confirm the departure of Joe Quaid as senior hurling manager this evening.

It has been reported that the former Limerick goalkeeper’s services will not be retained despite winning Division 2A and guiding Westmeath to the Joe McDonagh Cup final, which they lost to Laois.

Quaid spoke after that defeat of how he and the players had made a pact to come back and win the competition in 2020.
