John Elway would have preferred to have NFL draft pushed back

Speaking to Alexis Perry of the team’s official website in an interview earlier this week, Broncos general manager John Elway indicated that he would have preferred to have the NFL draft postponed to a later date.

“We’d rather have it backed up so we can get all of our scouts and everybody in,” Elway said, “but if it’s limited and we can stay here and they’re not going to move the draft, we’re in good shape.”

The NFL notified teams on Thursday that the draft will go on as scheduled from April 23-25. Elway explained to Perry that the team not sending their coaches to the combine earlier this offseason could prove to be beneficial now that teams are not allowed to have players visit their facilities.

“I think the coaches not going to the combine and them spending the whole week here just on the college side, it’s put us way ahead there because we’ve got the coaches’ rankings already . . . . If it moves back, great, we’re ready for that. If it doesn’t move, then we’ll be ready for that, too.”

Denver is scheduled to have 10 picks in the draft this year.
