John Elway comments on Broncos adjusting Chris Harris’ contract

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris skipped the first two weeks of the team’s organized team activities in protest of his contract situation. Harris was set to earn less than newly signed defensive back Kareem Jackson, who has never made it to a Pro Bowl (Harris has four All-Star nods).

The Broncos and Harris weren’t able to reach an agreement on a multi-year extension but they were able to come to terms on a pay increase for 2019. Judging from general manager John Elway’s comments, it sounds like the team would like to extend Harris in 2020.

“We have a lot of respect for Chris as a player and for everything he’s meant to our organization,” Elway said in a statement. “This contract adjustment recognizes his value to our team and the high expectations we have for Chris as a Bronco this season and hopefully for years to come.”

Denver increased Harris’ pay from $8.9 million to $12.05 million. The cornerback took to Twitter on Tuesday to thank Elway.

Harris, 29, has totaled 456 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 19 interceptions since joining the team as a college free agent out of Kansas in 2011.
