John Dorsey doesn’t rule out drafting a kicker

Could the Cleveland Browns spend one of their 2019 draft picks on a kicker? If you trust what John Dorsey says, it’s a possibility that remains on the table, albeit an unenthusiastic option.

The Browns GM related his past experiences with selecting specialists when he was with the Green Bay Packers in his press conference on Thursday.

“I believe that in Green Bay we drafted a kicker. It did not work out too well. I have been involved in that. There has also been a punter, too. That did not work out too well, either.”

The players Dorsey is referring to are kicker Mason Crosby and punter B.J. Sander. Crosby remains the kicker some 12 years later but has missed several big kicks for the team. He missed four field goals and an extra point in a loss last season. Sander lasted just one season as a third-round pick out of Ohio State back in 2004.

Despite not recalling those experiences favorably, Dorsey will pull the trigger if he believes it will help the Browns.

“Again, if he helps this organization moving forward and if he is at the right value versus what his abilities are, why wouldn’t you take a shot at it?”

Incumbent kicker Greg Joseph made 17 of his 20 field goal attempts in his rookie campaign in 2018. That’s a higher percentage than Crosby connected on in either of the last two seasons. The last kicker the Browns drafted, Zane Gonzalez, lasted just over one season before his unreliability brought Joseph to the team.
