John DeFilippo wants Nick Foles to be the Jags’ ‘assistant offensive coordinator’ during his recovery

While Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles won’t be able to take the field for several weeks, it goes without saying he’ll be heavily involved on the sidelines with rookie Gardner Minshew replacing him. In fact, Jaguars offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has already declared a role for the veteran who is currently recovering from surgery, and it’s one that’ll keep him more than busy on gamedays.

As most are aware, Foles had been heavily involved with the coaching staff as the No. 1 quarterback to begin with, so things may not be really all that different aside from not being able to take the field. That definitely should help the 23-year-old Minshew, who will have his plate full for the next couple of months.

Foles went down with a broken collarbone early in the first quarter Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, forcing Minshew into action in his first-ever regular-season game. The rookie impressed going 22-of-25 for 275 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. He also had a few notable achievements in the process becoming the first rookie quarterback to play from the 2019 draft class and also becoming the first quarterback to complete his first 13 passes since Brad Johnson did it in 1991.

As one of the leaders of the locker room, Foles has done nothing but support Minshew from the jump and the two seemingly have a strong bond. In fact, per coach Doug Marrone, one of Foles’ first questions after receiving his X-ray Sunday was rather or not he could return to the field to help the rookie. It looks like that bond will only get stronger in the coming weeks as the veteran will likely be very hands-on with Minshew alongside DeFilippo.
