John Collins in Rangers and Allan McGregor pop as Celtic legend dishes out blame during Cup exit post mortem

Pundit John Collins has pointed the finger at Allan McGregor and the Rangers defence for their Scottish Cup exit.

Steven Gerrard's hopes of adding to the Ibrox trophy cabinet were brought to an abrupt halt in a dramatic shoot-out defeat to St Johnstone.

There were unbelievable scenes as goalkeeper Zander Clark was left unmarked in the box to grab the assist for the last-gasp extra-time equaliser.

The champions' rearguard has been lauded all season for conceding just 12 goals in the Premiership, but Collins was quick to take aim at the backline organisation in the shock loss.

Celtic legend Collins claimed on BBC Sportsound that goalkeeper McGregor should have taken more responsibility when Clark came up for the late corner.

He said: “We’ve got to talk about the goal that Rangers have conceded.

"We’ve given them credit all season for being defensive.

“So you’ve got a goalkeeper who walks into a box, 6’4, five yards in front of the goalkeeper.

“The goalkeeper isn’t screaming to his centre half to pick him up.

"So if he’s not screaming at his centre half or somebody to pick him up, his mindset has got to be I’m going to come for this cross.

“Where is the goalkeeper when the cross comes in?

"Stuck on his goal line. We’ve given him credit all season, but it’s a shocking goal for Rangers to lose.

“The manager will be watching that, thinking how is that possible?

"Somebody has walked into our box and nobody has thought he is a big guy and I’ll pick him up.”
