John Cleese has found himself at the centre of a major Twitter storm after declaring he thinks London "isn't really an English city any more".
The Monty Python star made the comments about diversity in the capital on the social networking site this morning.
He was referencing remarks he made some time ago and insisting that lots of his friend now agree with him.
Cleese tweeted: "Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more.
“Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation.
“I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU."
Cleese, 79, who has openly supported Brexit , was bombarded with messages from furious followers who branded him "xenophobic".
One wrote: "Time to stop tweeting, John. This sounds like xenophobia."
Another pointed out: "European nationals weren’t allowed to vote in the EU referendum so I don’t think you’re making the point you think you’re making."
A third mocked the actor by comparing him to his most famous TV comedy character, tweeting: "You appear to have morphed into Basil Fawlty."
One more wrote: "‘English’ is rather odd. You even oppose Scots, Irish and Welsh immigration?"
Many also slammed him for his recent decision to quit Britain and move to the Caribbean.
One wrote: "So stay in the Caribbean then you twit, London doesn't want you."
Cleese moved to the Caribbean island of Nevis last November.
Speaking before the move, the Fawlty Towers star declared he was "disappointed" with life in Britain.
He told BBC2’s Newsnight: “I just thought to myself: ‘Right I’ll just give up and try somewhere else.’”
He added of Nevis: “It’s one of the nicest islands I’ve ever been on.
“The relationship between the races is absolutely superb. The people there are really kind.”
