WWE stars John Cena and Daniel Bryan have pulled out of a wrestling event in Saudi Arabia in the wake of the death of Jamal Khashoggi.

WWE Crown Jewel, which was due to take place on Friday, is happening in the Saudi Capital.

Although the pair have not offered a reason for their sudden dropping out, there are suggestions it may have been because of the way the Middle Eastern country handled the death of Jamal Khashoggi.

Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national who regularly criticised the Middle Eastern country’s rulers in the US press, vanished on October 2.

Jamal Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 (PA)

His body has not been found, but Turkish investigators, the US and Saudi Arabia have all now agreed he was murdered inside the consulate.

Cena and Bryan have been replaced in the event, following their departure.

The first WWE event in Saudi Arabia was held in Jeddah in April this year and featured John Cena and Daniel Bryan.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told the White House he believed murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be a dangerous Islamist, according to reports.

The prince allegedly made the comments in a phone call after Mr Khashoggi disappeared from the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul, but before Saudi Arabia admitted killing him.
